Mahon
Capital of Minorca since 1722, Mahon has some 27,000 inhabitants and rises on a cliff of 30 metres on the inner part of the port. Its old quarter offers interesting historic buildings and fantastic viewpoints over the port, this being the greatest attraction of the city and a whole world to discover.
The port of Mahon
With a length of almost six kilometres, a width of 1200 metres and a depth of up to 30 metres, it is considered to be the largest natural harbour in the Mediterranean and the second largest in the world. On its shores there rise beautiful examples of English architecture, pretty summerhouses and many defensive buildings. Along its quays, yachts, sailing boats and cruise ships from all over the world are moored. Taking a trip around the port in one of the two yellow catamarans is the only way of seeing all its corners and to get to know all its secrets. Without a doubt, it is one of the best trips that can be made in the island of Minorca.
The history of the port
Because of its natural characteristics and its strategic position, being practically in the centre of the western Mediterranean, the port of Mahon has been a coveted prey of all Mediterranean maritime powers, who throughout the centuries, have passed through the island: From the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and the Romans, to the Vandals, Byzantines and Arabs and then the Catalans, the French, the English and the Spanish who, on different occasions, have dominated Minorca because of the military and commercial value of this port.
